Regulation 10 – New revision 07 of the UN R10 Regulation on Electromagnetic Compatibility Enters into Force

We’ll like to inform you about the recent entry into force of revision 07 of the United Nations Regulation UN R10, concerning electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of vehicles, electronic sub assemblies and components. Main modification is immunity testing up to 6GHz and better descriptions of new technologies. Since BICON Laboratories is involved as technical experts in the development of new versions of standards and regulations, our lab is well prepared for all your needs on this matter.

Date of Implementation
Though the R10rev6 is already covering the same ground as the new R10rev7, by it’s amendments A1, A2, A3 and A4, the new series 07 of amendments to UN R10 Regulation is officially applicable from June 12th, 2025. Due to our known work and frequency ranges and levels for Military, Medical and Aerospace applications our lab as an accredited Technical Service in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, can already help manufacturers certify their vehicles and components with these new requirements for the new frequency ranges.

Main Updates in Series 07
The series 07 of amendments introduces important updates compared to the previous version, including:

Immunity test levels:
The upper frequency for radiated immunity for both vehicle installations, electronic sub assemblies (ESA), components and separate technical units (STU) has been moved from 2GHz to 6GHz ranges. So electronics tested up to 2GHz in the past have to show compatibility to disturbances up to 6GHz. In this range not only testing is mandatory at the communication frequencies but complete frequency coverage by means of logarithmic frequency sweeps are needed.

New (better) Technical Definitions:
• Automated Driving System (ADS) and Dynamic Driving Task (DDT)
• Residential and non-residential environments
• Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)

Accident Emergency Call Systems (AECS)
Requirements for ADS ensuring that vehicles remain in a safe mode during electromagnetic immunity tests.

Differentiation between residential and non-residential environments. The new amendment establishes specific limits for conducted radio frequency emissions according to the environment type, providing greater flexibility to heavy vehicles and buses that only can be charged at non-residential power grids.

Updated definition of additional failure criteria for different vehicle systems and functions, including specific requirements for AECS and AVAS systems. Agreement with Technical Service and Approval Authority remains.

Enhanced test procedures for various charging modes of electric and hybrid vehicles

Transitional Provisions
The transitional provisions include an adaptation period, though the R10rev6 is on specifics already covering the similar ground as the new R10rev7, by it’s amendments A1, A2, A3 and A4:

From September 1, 2029, Contracting Parties may refuse approvals according to previous series issued after that date
Approvals according to series 06 issued before September 1, 2029, will continue to be accepted
Contracting Parties will continue to accept series 06 approvals for vehicles, systems, or components not affected by changes in series 07
Implications for Manufacturers
Vehicle and component manufacturers will need to adapt their homologation processes to comply with these new requirements. The transitional period of more than four years provides sufficient time to plan and implement necessary changes.

Technical Service Laborartories:
Since BICON Laboratories is known in the field as experts on autonomous driving, especially their immunity related Sensor input interpretation and Immunity Production Margin Investigation techniques, our testing technology is as always already compatible with the direct future. Our strong team is ready to help you with the process of complying with the new Regulation 10 revision 7 AND already looking ahead to the demands of revision 8 (which is a development in progress).
